Ancestry.com - Getting the Most Out of the Civil War Pension Index, Part I

Ancestry.com - Getting the Most Out of the Civil War Pension Index, Part I

The oldest son of Samuel W. Settles, my third great grandfather (b. 1812 in Laurens County, Georgia), was George M. Settles. I found him with no trouble in the 1850 Census of Dale Co., Alabama, living with his family as a 15 year old. I have yet to locate him in the 1860 census, but I believe he was still in Alabama. I knew that he died in the Civil War in a battle at Baker's Creek, Mississippi, so tonight I checked the ancestry.com military database and to my great delight, I found listed in the index of pensions applied for relative to that conflict, George's wife's name: Sarah E. I plan, now, with the help of the above article, to send for the pension application itself.

Too bad the application was filed from Alabama. All of Florida's are scanned and available online!
